What is

Breast Augmentation?

The technical name of the procedure is augmentation mammoplasty but is most commonly referred to as breast augmentation, breast implants, boob job, or breast enlargement. Breast augmentation is a surgical procedure to increase breast size. This is usually accomplished with breast implants, which can be silicone or saline but can also be performed with fat grafting. With nearly 400,000 people a year opting for the procedure, it’s become one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the world.

Breast Augmentation Options

There are so many options available for Breast Augmentation these days. While it’s always great to have options, it can be incredibly overwhelming for people who are not “in the know.” If you plan on undergoing breast augmentation, you will need to determine where the incisions will be made, the material of your breast implants, the placement, and your breast implant size. Dr. Jaiswal will be sure to discuss the pros and cons of all your breast implant options during the consultation.

Incision placement

Dr. Jaiswal will make the incisions for your breast implant as inconspicuous as possible, but every patient will have different needs, which could affect the incision’s location.

  • Periareolar Incision: within the areola (pigmented skin surrounding the nipples)
  • Inframammary Incision: within the natural breast crease
  • Transaxillary or Endoscopic: within the armpit

Implant placement

Your implant placement will be discussed during your consultation but will depend on the existing breast tissue you currently have. Please keep in mind that not all patients will be able to choose their placement, but Dr. Jaiswal will advise you on what he believes to be your best option.

  • Submuscular implant placement: The implant is placed under your chest muscle (called the pectoral muscle) and is typically the most popular choice because submuscular placement tends to produce less noticeable outlines of the implants, providing a natural-looking result.
  • Subglandular implant placement: This technique means “under the gland” and can be an appropriate option if you have adequate breast tissue to create a smooth, natural-looking contour of the upper breast. This placement option can offer many women the most natural-looking results.

Implant Augmentation options

At the most basic level, there are two available options for augmentation: Implants and Fat Transfer. However, there are some sub-options for each type of breast implant.

  • Saline Breast Implants are filled with sterile salt water and can provide a uniform shape, firmness, and feel. However, they are stiffer than natural breast tissue and can slosh. It’s important to know that there is a higher chance of rupture when choosing saline implants. If a saline implant shell leaks, the implant will collapse, and the saline will be naturally absorbed and expelled by your body, requiring implant removal.
  • Structured Saline Breast Implants: They are also filled with sterile salt water but contain an inner structure to make the implant feel more natural.
  • Silicone breast implants: Filled with silicone gel that gives it a more natural breast tissue feel. If a silicone implant leaks, the gel can remain within its shell but can leak into the breast pocket. Should it leak, the implant will not collapse.
  • Gummy Bear Implants: Sometimes called “Form-stable” or “cohesive gel” implants, they maintain their shape even if the implant shell is broken. The consistency of the silicone gel is thicker than traditional silicone gel implants, which also makes them firmer. The shape of the implant will give your breasts more projection at the bottom and tapered towards the top. While rare, these implants can rotate, which creates an unusual appearance that requires a separate procedure to correct. This type of breast implant typically requires a slightly longer incision.
  • Round Breast Implants give your breast a fuller appearance than most form-stable implants and can achieve even more projection due to their higher profile. Due to their oval shape, they are less concerned about appearance if they rotate out of place.
  • Smooth Breast Implants: These implants have the softest feel and can move freely within the breast pocket, which makes them more natural. However, they do have some palpable or visible rippling under the skin.
  • Textured Breast Implants develop scar tissue that sticks to the implant, making it less likely to move inside the breast, preventing it from being repositioned. One of the advantages of this implant is the diminishing risk of a tight scar capsule.
  • Fat Transfer Augmentation: This form of implant uses fat removed from your body to help enlarge your breasts. The fat cells are sucked from specific areas of your body using Liposuction, purified, and then injected into your breasts. This allows for a more natural procedure with longer-lasting results and a more pleasing overall body shape, and it requires fewer incisions and scarring. The downside of this technique is that it involves more steps, and your body can absorb some of the fat, producing less dramatic results.

Breast Augmentation Recovery

Breast Augmentation recovery will be different for everyone. Typically, a week’s recovery time is adequate. Most patients will take 1-2 weeks off of work. Activity restrictions, including weight and positional restrictions, are in place for the first month. Dr. Jaiswal advises patients always to wear a bra for best results. You will be prescribed some pain medication to make your recovery more tolerable.

The breast implants may take 1-6 months (or longer) to settle into their final position. After 1 month, if there are no problems, all activity restrictions are typically lifted.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Type of Breast Implant Options Does Dr. Jaiswal Provide?

Only FDA-approved, the newest generation of implants are used. These can be silicone implants (including gummy-bear style) or saline implants.

Are There Scars After Breast Augmentation Surgery?

Yes. Dr. Jaiswal typically recommends placing an incision in the fold underneath the breast. This results in breast augmentation scars that are about 1.5 inches that are well hidden and typically heal quite well.

Why Should I Have My Breast Augmentation Performed by a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon?

For your safety, it’s essential that you only trust a board-certified plastic surgeon for breast augmentation procedures. Being board-certified guarantees that your doctor has completed extensive training and meets national standards in a specialized field. Dr. Jaiswal prides himself on safety and positive results, so when you come to him, not only will you get one of the best in the business, but you can also rest easy knowing that you will be safe and have skilled, trained hands working on you.

When Can I Resume My Workout Routine?

As much as we understand that you would like to stay fit and maintain the appearance and endurance developed from your routine, it’s also very important that you heal properly without risking any accidental interferences. After meeting with Dr. Jaiswal for your follow-ups, he can monitor your progress and inform you when you can resume more strenuous activities. On average, our Las Vegas patients require between four and six weeks to resume their workouts gradually.

What Are the Risks and Complications?

Despite Dr. Jaiswal’s having been highly trained and experienced in breast augmentation surgeries and his desire to provide you with results you can be proud of, he will always make sure your health and safety are his number one priorities. He feels that the best way to ensure this is with full transparency, which is why we have provided some of the risks and side effects associated with your Breast Augmentation procedures below:

  • Anesthesia risks
  • Bleeding
  • Breast implant associated-anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL), a type of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma (cancer of the immune system)
  • Breast pain
  • Changes in nipple and breast sensation
  • Connective tissue disease
  • Implant position changes
  • Implant leakage or rupture
  • Infection
  • Persistent pain
  • Poor scarring
  • Possibility of revision surgery
  • Scar tissue that distorts the shape of the breast implant (capsular contracture)
  • Wrinkling of the skin over the implant
  • Wrong or faulty position of the implant

If you have any concerning reactions during your recovery, please contact our clinic as soon as possible so that we may help.

Does Insurance Cover Breast Augmentation?

Since breast augmentation in Las Vegas is an elective cosmetic surgery, insurance companies will not cover the procedure. That being said, some insurance providers will cover breast implants for women who have had mastectomies due to breast cancer. However, if you require additional surgery later on, there’s a higher probability that those procedures will not be covered. Also, there is a possibility that getting implants could affect your insurance rates. If you have any questions regarding your eligibility or how breast augmentation could affect your rates, please contact your insurance provider before scheduling your consultation.

Will I Be Able to Breastfeed After Breast Augmentation?

Although it is possible to breastfeed after receiving breast implants, it will depend on the size and placement of your implant, as well as the type of surgery you’ve had. If your incisions are under the fold of your breast or through your armpit, there should be no problem breastfeeding in the future.

We do encourage our patients to wait until after they are finished having children and breastfeeding before getting a breast augmentation. If this is a concern for you, please bring this up during your consultation with Dr. Jaiswal.

How Many Appointments Will I Need?

In addition to your initial consultation and surgery, you can expect at least three or four more follow-up appointments. Dr. Jaiswal will want to see you about a week after the surgery to remove any bandages or stitches and monitor your initial recovery. After that, he will ask you to return between four and six weeks, at three months, and finally, at six months post-op.

These appointments are strictly to ensure your health and satisfaction with your results. After that, he may ask you to return for additional check-ups, but he will always give you an idea of when he’d like to see you again.

Can I Combine My Breast Implants with Other Surgeries?

Yes, most likely! Most breast augmentation patients frequently combine their breast augmentations with tummy tucks, liposuction, or fat transfer to the buttocks (BBL). Breast augmentation surgery is also frequently combined with a breast lift for women with sagging breasts who would also like to improve their breast volume. If you have any specific body or facial goals in mind, please discuss them with Dr. Jaiswal in your initial consultation.

When Will I See the Results of My Breast Augmentation?

You will notice a larger size right away; however, it will take between 1 and 6 months (or longer) for the implants to settle into their final position. Patience is key when undergoing a breast augmentation procedure.

How Long Will the Results Last?

The results will be permanent, but patients may decide to remove their implants or change their size. In addition, patients may desire a breast lift later on.
