Otoplasty?
This is a procedure designed to change the position and/or size of the ears. This can include any part of the ear including earlobes (for treatment of gauged earlobes or elongated earlobes).

What’s the First Step?

When discussing your ear pinning surgery with Dr. Jaiswal, you’ll want to be as open and honest as possible. We’ll have questions about past surgeries, any medications currently being taken, and if you have any reactions to medications.
Dr. Jaiswal will see you in the pre-operative area and review the procedure with you. He will then take measurements and make markings to prepare the operative plan. The markings and plan will be reviewed with you in the mirror to make sure you are comfortable with the proposed changes.
Surgery is usually done with local anesthesia only- you do not have to go to sleep! You are free to eat breakfast and lunch and drink fluids the day of the procedure. In the procedure room, the ears are numbed and then the surgery is performed. Patients are usually given medication for relaxation beforehand and most will take a short nap while the procedure is being done. Total operative time can range from 20-90 minutes.
After the procedure dressings are placed and you will go home. There is very mild soreness to the ears for 24-48 hours.
Recovery from ear surgery is typically mild and straightforward. There is mild soreness which can be easily relieved with over-the-counter or prescription pain medications, depending on your preference. Antibiotics are also prescribed. Patients may shower starting the day after surgery.
Dr. Jaiswal recommends wearing a headband (tennis player style) over the ears for one month at all times except when showering to help keep the ears in the desired position. An ointment is also recommended over the incisions. Final results may not be seen for a month or longer. Vigorous exercise is not recommended for the first 4 weeks following surgery. Patients are encouraged to sleep on their back and avoid rubbing their ears.

Frequently Asked Questions
Are the results of otoplasty permanent?
Yes! The changes will be permanent. However, there can be some recurrence of ear position if the sutures fail- this is a known complication of otoplasty and may require revision.
What are the risks/complications of Otoplasty?
These will be discussed in detail during the consultation and pre-operative appointments. However some potential risks/complications to be aware of include: recurrence of ear position, infection, bleeding, asymmetry, and need for additional or revision surgery.
Is Otoplasty painful?
This is typically not a very painful procedure. Most patients will need some type of pain medication for 2-3 days. However, many times only over-the-counter medications can be used effectively.
What’s the best age for ear pinning surgery?
Dr. Jaiswal recommends waiting until at least the teenage years before having the procedure done in order to ensure patients can comply with the surgery and post-operative instructions. For younger patients, general anesthesia may need to be used.
